We’ve got some big news to share.
First, we are pleased to announce that the Office of Naval Research has committed an additional $30M to Elemental Excelerator, bringing its total funding commitment to more than $60M. The majority of the funding will go directly to startups, up to $1M per company. You can read more here.
Second, today we are releasing our 2018 Impact Report.
This report measures our efforts to revamp the systems that touch people’s lives through promising new innovation and mission-driven entrepreneurs. It colors in the picture for our theory that innovation can transform a place, and that this change must be rooted in culture and community. The impact report also takes stock of how Elemental Excelerator has grown over the past year and a half, which has been an especially transformative time for our team.
Inside this report, you’ll find 1) stories from our portfolio companies and partners, 2) a dose of data quantifying our place-based approach to innovation, 3) lessons we’ve learned over the past five years, and 4) answers to three fundamental questions we use to navigate our work:
1. How are we accelerating startups across energy, water, agriculture, and mobility?
2. How are we working to unlock a clean, resilient, and equitable future?
3. How are we deepening our roots in Hawaii and scaling beyond?
Innovation is messy and difficult and fraught with risk. In our mission to help startups change the world, one community at a time, we are usually trying something new — and sometimes learning hard lessons as often as we’re succeeding.
